Destination: Wordpress. And Another Doughnut

I've been with Blogger/Blogspot for over 2 years now. And it's been great. But I've been using Wordpress for another little project and really like the functionality. So the goal this week is to move Jillie of All Trades over there. I'll be honest, they make it sound pretty easy, so figure I can import it in about 5 minutes. I'm not sure what that means for my email followers or anyone reading via RSS. But will figure that out and provide the link to the new site.

In the meantime, why not end the weekend with this week's doughnut? The Pumpkin Cake Doughnut from Doughnut Plant. Not really pumpkin-y enough for me, but still enjoyed it with my Lavazza at Eataly. When they put out a seasonal doughnut, I feel the need to try it (if you remember, I had the pumpkin yeast doughnut a few weeks ago). But still need to get to the Tres Leches and a few of the other standards.

Book Club: The Lotus Eaters

Book Club again, a small group of us, but we are continuing on! This month was The Lotus Eaters, which follows a female photographer in Vietnam. I thought it was very fascinating for a fiction piece. And I had to speed read through the end to find out what happens. So there was no talking over coffee last Saturday. I'm Type A and like a good student, read the book...even if we never talk about it.

I hosted this month, so neatened up the little apartment, bought some more plates (I am short!). And made Elizabeth's Pumpkin Pie Squares. I realized too late that I had thrown away my 9x13 and didn't replace it. So at 5 am that morning I had to go with the 9x9 pan. I might reassess the topping amount in a smaller pan. And then Deb's Chicken Square's for dinner.

And my guests were so sweet to bring more tasty desserts, macaroons and cookies.

Noodles in Chinatown: Lam Zhou Handmade Noodle

Our Sunday lunch discussion started with Red Farm, a new dim sum place, in the West Village. You know, Chinese food that appeals to the professional Chelsea/New York crowd. It was closed for lunch. So we jumped right to very authentic, in Chinatown. Lam Zhou Handmade Noodle.

4 stars on 228 reviews? That's pretty darn good. 4 stars on at least 100 reviews is Mark's minimum. We jump on the F train and head south. We get to 144 East Broadway and think "this is it?". But they had an "A" rating, and the cool little wine bar near us got a "C". So it can't be that bad. I'll admit, the beef had some beef parts there were chewy, which I kind of expected after having eaten calf's calf muscle soup in China. But I left some broth to cover that at the end. The noodles and broth were so good, though. The dumplings were great.

They rolled out handmade noodles on the table next to me (it's loud, the banging of the dough, sort of a "thwack thwack" every time it hit the counter). And they wrapped dumplings behind me.

And you can't beat the prices. Now, I hear the place to go for really authentic Chinese is Flushing, it's not even Chinatown. But we are starting to test the limits of our comfort zone. You basically pay by walking to the back of the store when you are done and handing over cash. I'm not sure a tip is even really necessary. Prices are great. How can you not order a dozen dumplings for $3?

Wedding Cake: Peanut Butter!

I like cake. Plain and simple. And Sarah lined up something right up my alley. Peanut butter and chocolate, in cake form. Kudos!

It doesn't end there, though. We had a table of desserts to enjoy. This is after the sorbet between courses at dinner.

Wedding: Wine & Chocolate

S&S's wedding weekend continues...
Between the ceremony at St. Christopher and the reception, all the guests were invited to Rustico on Love Point (how appropriate!) for wine and cheese and chocolate. Right up my alley! I tried 2 of the reds and a white, starting with the Sierra Collado above. I really liked the red by the little roast beef toasts, I think it was the shiraz. Anyhow, loved having glass in hand and catching up with friends I hadn't seen in a while!

And look at the chocolate lobsters and buckeyes! You know I couldn't say "no" to these.

Guests spilled out to the patio area, lingered in side, sipped and ate.

Wedding Weekend: Sarah & Steve

Wedding weekend. A beautiful weekend. The setting was perfect, the couple was obviously happy, and it was a crowd of friends and family. My dear friend Sarah got married this weekend in Maryland. It's crazy for me to think how long we've known each other now. Nearly 10 years, since it's 10 years since we applied to Darden, and we were roommates that first year. Sight unseen, just an exchange of emails and maybe a phone call. And clearly worked out quite well.

The flowers at the church and the reception were gorgeous. I couldn't help but take a few shots. And the bridesmaids bouquets were pretty in pink.

We were right on the water, so sipped champagne while the sun set.

And I'll have a whole week of posts because I can't just sum it up with these pictures. More to come!

Pumpkin: Trader Joe Pumpkin Bread & Muffin Mix

This is my test of the TJ's pumpkin bread mix. I actually wasn't allowed to buy the mix. It went something like this:

"If you make it, I end up eating it all"

So to be supportive, I just sampled the pumpkin bread with chocolate chips at the sample station (three samples, I'll come clean). That counts as enough for a pumpkin report out, right?

Last year I bought three boxes to stock up. I do really like it, but love 2 recipes: one from his mom and the other from my mom. Clearly, moms are good at homemade pumpkin bread. I may have to make so I can report back with the recipe!

And I'm off to Maryland on Friday for Sarah's wedding! Lots of picks to come, will be a great weekend with some very very good friends.

Apples Are Fall

It couldn't get any more "fall" than bins of apples. I grew up in Ellington, CT. We apple picked all the time, riding the tractor up to the orchard (or just walking), and filling a tote full of apples. As it became September, then October, new varieties were ready for picking. I took it for granted, apparently, because people spend hours trekking out to NJ or Westchester from the city for the same experience. Just more crowded. Good 'ole Johnny Appleseeds. I think some of the orchards have become developments and it's not quiet the same experience, but good memories.

Pumpkin: Pumpkin Doughtnut @ Doughnut Plant

Our Sunday mornings usually start with a walk to the Doughnut Plant on 23rd Street, where we pick up our doughnuts. Then we head over to Lavazza at Eataly for coffee (and our doughnuts). If you remember on Friday during my pumpkin macaroon post, I mentioned that I really hoped they were making pumpkin doughnuts. I actually checked the menu on Saturday, but no luck.

But as we approach the store, I see the sign...

And it's confirmed inside when I see the display case and the girl is putting up the flavor signs...

I'd say it was more of a overall fall "spice" with notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, and goodness. There were some toasted seeds on top of the glaze, which were delicious. Overall, a good way to start my day. I like the yeast doughnuts. Nice and light, with a sweet glaze. I may have to give the pumpkin cake doughnut a try, that might be more of the pumpkin I was looking for.

Madison Square Eats, Get There Soon!

In the fall, the pedestrian area near the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park becomes a little festival of foods. For about a month, vendors sell their goods. And people like me buy them to eat. For the most part, it's all food and beer, but the spice table was too colorful not to capture. Marimekko also just moved in next to Eataly, so they must have provided the umbrellas. I recognize the print.

Both trips involved just wanting a snack as we were walking through. Two weeks ago, we stopped for a vegetarian bun from Hong Kong Street cart. Today it was a snack on the way to Restoration Hardware and ABC Home in Union Square. We've had the pretzels from Sigmund at the cart outside of the Met, today we tried the Truffle Cheddar. Sigmunds is in Brooklyn if you want to visit the original location.

I love the activity, the people eating, sitting in the pedestrian friendly area...but you better head there this week. It closes up this Friday.

Pumpkin: Macaroon

I love October because I think it gives me a license to eat all things pumpkin. Cookies, candy, drinks, muffins, bread. Anything. So lets get started with the pumpkin items!

I just started out on my pumpkin eating adventure today. I was supposed to make Attempt #2 to Lauderee for the macaroons today (look back at Attempt #1 in September). But the threat of rain stopped AK and me in our tracks, and we just walked a few streets to Macaroon Cafe.

So cute! I mean, I've been here before for lunch. But was reminded how cute it is. And they had pumpkin macaroons. So of course I had to get one. Just the right cookie and amount of filling. Not too sticky or gummy. So doubly delightful treat today: pumpkin AND the start of our official macaroon tasting adventure (not that I wasn't already on one, I will always eat one given the opportunity.

What I'm really waiting for is the pumpkin donut at Doughnut Plant. Please make one for me.

Zoe's Chocolates

In September I was at my friend LC's for Sarah's bridal shower. I was lucky enough to be there when she opened the box of chocolates she received as a thank you gift. I proceeded to taste a few from Zoe's Chocolates of Waynesboro, PA and Frederick, MD.

There is really nothing I have against any chocolate. Sweet and creamy, salted, filled....I'll pretty much eat them all. Too dark and I'm not as excited, but I'll eat it.

But Zoe's were really very very good. I honestly think I could have devoured the entire box. Zoe comes from a long line of Greek chocolatiers, and the business is still family run. Sarah has a special connection to Waynesboro as this is where her husband-to-be hails from. You can find them in Whole Foods in MD and select stores in other states. As a side note, I like how Whole Foods will feature local brands. Not that I've ever bought a Mast Brothers chocolate bar from Brooklyn (where they literally sailed the cocoa beans from South America on a sail boat, I'm not kidding).

She makes lots of yummy flavors like pomegranate, honeycomb and orange flower. Thank you, Sarah! I will see you soon for the big day!

More caramel sauce. What's wrong with that? I picked up this litte jar at the Hester Street Fair earlier this summer. After sampling a few flavors, I picked up the Chai right from the the owners of the business. They use the same basic ingredients in all of their caramel: organic cane sugar, organic cream and butter. Herbs and spices come next. And it's made with love in Brooklyn.

It was tasty, especially warmed and over ice cream with Morello cherries. My favorite way to eat caramel sauce these days. I'm a huge fan of the Fleur de Sel from TJ's, but this was a nice change. It was a little spicy.

Last Summer Fruit & Bees

The weather is beautiful and it's shaping up to be another nice day. Just some grapes and fruits from the Greenmarket. There were bees swarming all over the Concord grapes, so make them a tough sell. But maybe a selling point. It means they are super sweet, right? If you look closely, you can see the bees all over the grapes.

Breakfast in Mad Sq Park: Doughnut Included

My really big pink doughnut from Doughnut Plant. Today it was fresh Raspberry. Mmmmm.....We picked up our doughnuts, continued on to Lavazza and found ourselves a table in the pedestrian area near the Flatiron building. The weather this morning reminded me of mornings in California. Cool. Nice. We watched the tourists, watched the dogs in the dog park, and sipped our coffee. Perfect start to the weekend.

Olive Oil: A Familiar Face in a New Place

Last night I mentioned we were in Eataly (for a fresh loaf of bread). We were browsing the aisles of olive oil, talking about how hard it was to pick. We we schooled in the under notes of grass and pepper from the sales person at O&Co last year. Well, what do you know, he was at Eataly doing a little sampling! I recognized him from the glasses. Nicholas Coleman did a few classes for Mario Batali, and apparently created his own role at the mega Italian store/restaurant. He is the official Olive Oil Specialist.

He told us they have great oils for half the price at O&Co, and you don't need the $7 spout they sell (thanks, we bought one). These are all Italian olive oils, from a variety of regions. We tried a great oil that starts out grassy and ends with a nice peppery finish. It's bold, I guess you could say. And is great with bread. So we decided it needed to live at home with us.

Nicholas runs a class at La Scuola di Eataly. He takes you on an Italian tasting tour of oils, and you sample some dishes cooked/made with the oils. Something I'd definitely consider in the future.

Panettone Time, Already?

We were in Eataly this weekend, and I saw the display. I read the sign. Can it be true, is one of my favorite holiday treats already back in stock? It seems so early, I was just about to embark on my Diet of All Things Pumpkin for the month of October. Panettone might have to wait a month, but I do love the way the Italians think (see sign below).

Last Bike Ride of the Season: MS Bike Tour

I had big plans to do the 50 mile ride this week, I felt up to it. And then I was cold at the start and realized I had a bunch of things I needed to do before I head out to CT this afternoon. So 30 miles it was, but a fast 30 miles around the perimeter of Manhattan and I finished in about 1:45. The FDR and West Side Highway were shut down for us, and I was focused on pushing hard for a good time.

Again, no rain this week! Next year, mental note to remember the long sleeve shirt under the short sleeve one. Now that I've done the two 30 mile rides with ease, ready to tackle something longer. Next year. I'm tired of the bike leaning against the wall near the door so want to take the tire off and store it under the counter for the winter. The issues of a tiny NY apartment.

Free Foodie Things, Back at Gansevoort Plaza

It's the NY Food & Wine Festival this weekend. We didn't plan ahead for any events I don't have E here to try wines (especially those at the $10 price point for a certain retailer). So, we checked the schedule and opted for a few random pop ups to stop into on our way to lunch.

First we stopped at the new Dream Hotel. It's right behind the Maritime Hotel, is a new hot spot for celebs, and pretty nice inside. The pool is above the lobby ceiling, so you can see through the glass holes into the pool. We are definitely coming back here for a drink just to enjoy the space more. I'm not sure you'll catch me hanging out at Ph-D, though.

Then we moved on to a discussion with old and new chefs. I recognized Daniel Boulud immediately, so we sat for an hour and listened as they discussed the restaurant business. This was in the same plaza as the Singapore Takeout I reported on 2 weeks ago. It's always a go to for something new and interesting. A nice space in the middle of the meatpacking. You never know what might pop up here, especially in the fall.

Last was a stop back at the Dream Hotel on our way to the Greenmarket, and post lunch at Bill's Burger Bar. Arianna is definitely all over the place these days. I sampled a blueberry beet smoothy, watched yoga in the event space (too full from burgers to participate) and heard all about this guy's artisan bottled tea.

We were supposed to go to the Bronx Zoo with our Google Offers (have I mentioned they have some really good deals for some of our favorite NY places?), but with the threat of rain, we postponed that venture. But we will make it, M. really wants to see the red pandas!

Brazilian Treat: Alfajor Havanna

It's hard for me to pass up a treat. So when Mariana, my coworker, returned from Brazil and came around with these dulce de leche cookies, my response was "yes please!". These are traditional, with the meringue coating. But it's a layer of dulce de leche sandwiched between two soft cookies. Dulce de leche is slowly heated sweetened milk. Heated to the point where it becomes caramelized and oh so good. Try one if you have the chance.

Twin Lights Ride: 30 Miles

Start of the Ride

I signed up for the Twin Lights ride back in July. And I convinced a fellow triathlete to ride as well. Of course, as the day approached, we were suddenly willing to give up on the entire ride if it rained. So much for being hard core during triathlon training, it's all gone out the window. But we confirmed our plans Saturday night and said 30 miles might be enough.

100 miles?

I got my pick up before the Holland Tunnel and off we went to the Highlands in New Jersey. The ride was really nice and the weather held out for us, not a lick of rain. I have a nice farmer's tan to show for it. We rode through the back roads of New Jersey.

2nd Pit Stop. There was a chocolate fountain here.

Yes, at mile 11 we were tempted to just continue on the 55 mile route. And then, after a bit of debate, we decided to finish 30 miles strong. Good call, as my behind was ready for a break by mile 30. Gearing up for another ride next weekend, this time up and over the George Washington bridge.

Epicerie Boulud: A French Treat for the Afternoon

We were on our way to Moneyball and needed something sweet after lunch. So we passed by Epicerie Boulud, Daniel Boulud's patisserie on the Upper West Side. M had the Blueberry Financier, a small cake that was super moist. I tried, so I know. I had the Chamonix, named after the French town. It's a small, glazed cake with fruit in it. Very tasty. I loved the idea that you could get a little treat and take it to the standing bar. There were a few standing tables inside, and a few more outside (where you can also sit for service). I'm not sure the standing bar works well everywhere, but love it when I find one in New York.

I do love my chocolate desserts, but the tarts looked amazing. Will definitely have to come back again. And I'd love to try one of his 12 other restaurants, including the Michelin 3-star Daniel. I'll warm up with one of the sanwiches here first.

Cupcakes, Three in One Day

This past weekend was my Shop for Success event, where the YES! organization hosted a shopping experience (with nails and makeovers) to benefit Dress for Success. As part of this, I was tasked with organizing the pick up of cupcakes. So I had 3 kinds in 1 day.

Ok, so we actually picked up Tonnie's minis on Friday. But I tried it on Saturday. Tonnie's is bit of a "design your own" cupcake kind of place on 122nd street and Lenox Ave. A bit of a field trip for A and me. I had to leave her in the car so I didn't get towed, but told her not to die as I left her with the windows up because I couldn't figure out how to turn the car back on to get the windows down. This is what you get for the non-driver who picks a different zipcar every time (this time it was the red Prius). Anyways, at Tonnie's, you pick a cupcake, add a frosting and some toppings. The place was hopping at 3 pm. We picked up a generous donation of 250 mini cupcakes and headed back to midtown.

Then there was our good old friend, Magnolia Bakery, who donated a few dozen. This time I sent one of my volunteers to make the pick up. These were really tasty. I think the minis are better than the full size. Moist cake and the right amount of frosting.

Finally, there were Fanny Cakes that were individually boxed. I am assuming they have some sort of shelf life of more than a day. Cute, not as tasty, though. Cake was a little dry and the frosting was not frosting like I like it.

Lots of cake, that's for sure. What I really want is a nice Carrot Cake Cupcake with cream cheese frosting....mmm...

Singapore Takeout: The Meatpacking Version

M read about the Singapore Takeout this past week. I ran into a colleague this weekend and she said she was heading as sell. So we walked through to check it out, since it's really not that far away. It was a pop-up in Gansevort Plaza in the Meatpacking, serving traditional Singapore food.

I had the Laksa, a coconut curry based dish. M had the Buah Keluak, or the beef ribs. With a little seating, some waters and a beautiful fall day, we were happy campers. And did I mention this was a free event? Granted, I did hear about Singapore with a video in the background. But it was really good, lots of spice and taste.

The area they made the food in was a converted shipping container. So, pretty cool. A nice little Sunday lunch activity before we moved on to Soho for some browsing. Where I attempted to find jeans, but gave up and decided I needed to focus another day. I've given Gap and Joe's a try. Next up is Madewell and Paige. Why is it so darn difficult?

Book Club: Established Oct 2007

Book Club. Wine Drinking Club. Catching Up Club. Life Event Club. I think it's become all of these. Since October 2007, we've been meeting and drinking, through break ups, new jobs, weddings and babies. I was invited by a colleague and friend, who went to undergrad at UVA and then Wharton with a bunch of Wharton ladies. And that's how I found my way in.

We eat, we drink. Laura hosted this past month. I went early to watch her whip up pizza rolls and baked tomatoes. And it was a hit because we ate everything! It was her sister's birthday, so we could have cake, too. Every first Tuesday of the month. Earlier this year, it just sort of went away, so a few of us would email and wish it would come back....and it did this spring when a brave soul offered to open her home to us again.

We've read so many books now, 43 in total. We read everything. Hunger Games to There is Something About Kevin. Sometimes the book discussion is 15 minutes, but we are sure to get it in. I think I'll make the book list a separate post, it's fun to look back. And I'm so proud of having read all of them (yes, I'm a good student like that).

One of the things I enjoyed this weekend was getting up at LC's house (after sleeping well in her guest bedroom), coming downstairs, and having coffee and breakfast at her kitchen table. The coffee was already brewing. There are windows in the corner of her breakfast "nook", so when you open them all up, the breeze blows in. It was just so relaxing.

Saturday we had a little McD's, Sunday we went the sweet route. Mr. C brought us back treats, what a nice guy! Ahhh, good friends make a good weekend.

Sarah's Getting Married!

One my very good Darden girlfriends, Sarah, is getting married! She deserves only the best, so it was so nice to start the wedding celebration with a shower and girl's time this weekend in Washington DC.

Champagne, cheese, sweets, good friends, faces I haven't seen in years...it made for a lovely morning and afternoon. The weather was sunny and we were on a cute little cobble stone street with yummy food. Yes, of course there are food pics.

After the shower, we gathered for spa time and more champagne. And then dinner and a little sparkling rose to toast. The celebration will continue in October at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club. Only 6 weeks away, but not soon enough. I miss my time with the girls.

Paletas from La Newyorkina

We walk the High Line a lot. For a leisurely stroll on the weekends, or on the way back from the gym. So I see quite a few people eating La Newyorkina's Paletas (Mexican Ice Pops). More than just a few.

After an entire summer of no pops, I figured having a visitor in town was a good reason to explore and get one.

Fanny Selling Pops

According to Fanny's website (she's La Newyorkina), paleta is from the word "palo" which means stick. She makes some really neat flavors. We went for one Passion Fruit and one Tamarind. It just sounded interesting, so had to get it.

They are very flavorful. You know when you get a cheap pop and you suck the juice out and it's just tasteless ice left? Not here, it's all juicy. She makes Hibiscus, Coconut, Key Lime...

I was told to sprinkle a little of the sweet chili on it to enhance the flavor, so of course I did.

Macaroons at Laduree: Attempt #1

Lauduree, the premier French macaroon shop in Paris opened it's first North American outpost on Madison Ave just last week. The lines were long Day One. And when we were in the neighborhood on Saturday I suggested we just run by since we were only 2 blocks away. Run by. Run in. Just sample a few. No way, not with this line. So we longingly looked in from the sidewalk.

I love the couple at the front of the line to get in.

So, will try again since the office is not that far. And I'll provide the full report on French macaroons. Of course, we had the discussion that they all taste good. Which I can't disagree with, frosting sandwiched between meringue cookies is great, no matter where it's from.

Posing Pepper Farmer

We were afraid Irene had wiped out our Greenmarket growers, so ventured there Saturday afternoon to check in on our favorite agricultural men. Our favorite growers didn't have lettuce, curly leaf parsley, carrots or celery. The batch they planted 2-3 weeks ago to be ready this week was wiped out. And they weren't sure about the vegetables planted to come in a few weeks. If the water gets in there, it can just rot the growing veggies in the ground. But they have about 500 acres in Goshen, NY, so quite a bit did survive.

Myers of Keswick

There is probably the American version of the Myer's of Keswick in London for Americans living there. The tiny shop that stocks the favorites that you just can't get in your new home. It's south of the Meat Packing on the way to the West Village. M loves the Cherry Airwaves gum. The gum with the slightly medicinal taste in a chicklet shape with the hard shell. They didn't carry it for awhile, but maybe they were keeping track of how many people were asking for it. Because when we stopped in yesterday, it was there!

But every time we come in there, it smells like home. They bake all sorts of little meat pies and they make sausages. Oh, I bet they are good. I think Fall will be the time to finally give in. But they've also go the favorites: all kind of English chocolates, Yorkshire pudding mixes and of course, Marmite. I'd like to get a jar just to try it. Even for an American like me, I do love this shop.

As you can imagine, they were all over the Royal Wedding this past spring. And there are other holidays where they are clearly making and wrapping up the traditional meals of that particular day. I don't know what they are, but when we find ourselves in the store around Easter and Christmas, I can smell the goodness.

Richmond, Va area: green iced tea

Needless to say, we made a lot of stops from DC to the OBX. Quite a few at Starbucks. I started out with a grande skim latte outside DC. Moved on to a green iced tea around Richmond. Around Norfolk I moved on to the black iced tea. A, my college roommate and car buddy, had 2 along the way as well. Of course, every drink necessitates another stop along the way.

What's funny is that I really never go to Starbucks. There is one in the base of our building where I'll meet people during the day. I do go to the ING across the street for a Peet's. But hey, I was on vacation and wanted to sample the offerings. And I did, again and again.

It was about this time last week we were debating whether Irene was really a threat. We had a beautiful morning at the beach and quality pool time in the afternoon. Wednesday night we decided we probably needed to pack up and head back north.

These are our last trip when the men went to collect the tent we kept at the beach. I really did help, but I also played photographer. Sad to leave, but we did have a few solid days so am very thankful for that. And good memories, even better.

Oh, No, Irene

I have been on a bit of a hiatus while I started my week at the Outer Banks and decided to go offline. But I'm back in New York City and bracing for Irene. I'll have to report on the beach this coming week, while I reminisce about my vacation cut short. Chased off the beach and robbed of my full 7 days.

Everything was closing early or closed by 8 am. I think mostly because the people who work in the shops couldn't make it in with the subway system shut down. La Bergamote, the little French place past Joe, took in the Joe refugees after we saw this sign.

M braved the NSA to get us the essentials Friday afternoon. We added more water, a can of Chef Boyaredee and Deviled Ham (my request later that night after dinner out).

We ventured out for lunch. The Flatiron building was taking precautions. And Eataly was "sort of closed" as the sign said. So we gathered up some cheeses, meats and bread for lunch before they really shut down. Now we are really in, and I'm already bored. I said it would be a great chance to catch up on movies like St. Elmo's Fire and Working Girl. I didn't get a good response to that one!

Trader Joe Fav: Mandarin Orange Chicken

There are quite a few Trader Joe's products I've come to love. One of them is the Mandarin Orange Chicken. It makes a great Sunday dinner (a bit of a treat). And it's ready in minutes.

M, the chef, masterfully stirs up the chicken and sauce on the stove top. I run over to New Kam Lai for the white rice for $2. Yes, we decided it was just easier to run around the corner for perfect sticky rice since we never have rice on hand. We tag team this dinner.

Sunday we even added some onions we had on hand, just like they do in Southwestern China. Really. After a never ending amount of rain on Sunday, this really hit the spot.

All Knit Up

This post is for my sister who asked once again that I stop reporting on food. This is for you, Amy!

I saw this last Wednesday on the way to the gym. Yes, that is one of those cherry picker trucks all knit up. Top to bottom in yarn. There has been a bit of this in New York of late. Someone knit a covering for the bull on Wall Street.

Not to be outdone, the door man had his own outfit. For his sake, I was glad it wasn't one of our record warm weather days. Now that we are close to September, I think M and I will have to engage in gallery hopping on Thursday evenings. M likes the "found art"...the stuff made with things you have in your house, reassembled in a gallery and deemed art. Or if it involves any sort of performance or projector, that's a hit too. I'll have to keep you posted on how our gallery hopping goes.

Schnitzel, I Gave In

Friday is Schnitzel Truck day in the office. Well, for most of the team as I haven't had it yet. Not that I haven't wanted to get it. But for some reason, just wanted something lighter before a swim after work. But it was a nice day, I found a colleague in for splitting the sandwich, and off we went with our team and the interns. It's one of the gourmet food trucks roaming midtown.

First issue, the Truck wasn't in the normal spot on 52nd off of Lex. I checked Twitter and discovered they were kicked out of their spot. So, on to the storefront the opened not that long ago....

The Schnitzel is thin chicken or pork cutlets lightly fried. I know, you are probably thinking heavy sausages, heavy fried cutlets...but it's not that at all. You can get the sandwich version on Ciabatta bread, or a plate with sides. I was told the sandwich is delicious, with the chipotle mayo. R and I opted for no cheese and sauce on the side.

It was delicious, not greasy at all. And I gave in to the red cabbage. My grandma used to make it and now my dad does. All in all, a very satisfying lunch.

Vacation...is..coming

Friday, just a week now. I'll be off to the Outer Banks for some sand, sun (if it can make it through my heavily applied sunblock), friends and maybe a little wine. I just read that the idea of planning a trip and looking forward to it can bring as much enjoyment as actually being on vacation. I think they could be right. But that week is pretty darn good, too.

We love heirloom tomatoes here. Love them. Love how they can look weird. Love how they come in yellow, red and green variations. For something not always pretty, they do taste great. We've been eating them for two weeks now, care of our local growers. Need to fit just a few more in before they go away for the season!

Race Day: Rain Rain & More Rain!

The forecast for rain has somehow totally brought down the stress level for some reason. It's almost like I can just enjoy the race now. And maybe the run won't be so incredibly hot!

But it's not just the race and I was reminded of that last night at our Team in Training Inspiration Dinner where 500 of us started the carbo load. Lily Hubschman was the honored speaker. Her father was the CEO of GECAS, GE's aircraft leasing business, where I worked in 2004. I remembered Henry, he knew the airline industry, he was respected, and he had a very loving family. And he suffered from Leukemia for 10 years, just passing away in February. Lily is doing her first tri this year, Team in Training giving her the momentum to keep going. I've raised over $2,800 this year, and I'm reminded why. It was honestly a bit of a shock to see his picture up there and see his daughter so poised on stage.

On a lighter note...I laugh at all the gear required, and I don't even have the bike here.

The tested race day energy gels. The morning will start with PB&J on wheat at home at 3:30 am. Then a banana around 5 am at the swim start. Then we'll move on to the Espresso to start the bike. Then some Chocolate Cherry to carry me through the bike. We'll have a burst of freshness as we hit 72nd street when the Green Apple hits the taste buds.

Still an amateur, though, if you see the grease on my other leg (and all over my hands).

If you knew me in high school (especially during my track & field days)...you and I would never have thought I'd be doing this in 20 years. Oh, what you can do when you put your mind to it!

Carrot Cake Doughnut care of Doughnut Plant. Back in my early July post, I vowed to try this doughnut when we came back. Very enjoyable, with cream cheese in the doughnut to top it off. It really is like a piece of cake almost. I almost think I like the Oatmeal better, dare I say it? Maybe I just need to give this one another try since carrot cake is one of my favorite things in the world.

My last Smorgasburg post for the week, I promise. But I had to end with this. Luxury mayo, really? Yes, that is what Empire Mayonnaise says on their site. I'm all for artisinal, gourmet, small batch. But maybe it's gone too far. Made with local eggs.

Crazy flavors like Thai Chili and Lime Pickle. And sweet flavors, too.

So maybe it does go well in egg salad. But I'm going to put my foot down on this one. I still really like Miracle Whip.

It just makes me laugh. And then think....what else can I turn into an artisinal product?

Smorgasburg: Desserts

As I promised in my last post, there would be dessert at Smorgasburg. M had one of the $6 ice cream sandwiches last week. Yes, that's right, $6. And The Good Batch sold out last week. We went back for the Chocolate Hazelnut one. It was just ok, not a ton of flavor. I did like the thinner waffle type cookie, though. But lets face it, who doesn't love ice cream in any form.

And because this seemed a little healthier, we decided we could have two desserts. Chocolate covered frozen bananas, toppings optional, made to order. When we approached the cart, they were out of bananas. But someone was coming right back with more. Well, this was certainly a crowd pleaser because there was a line 10 deep after we got ours.

They mastered the chocolate. It's thick and really sticks to the banana. I was afraid it was going to all slide off after he pulled it out of the hot chocolate. The bananas are care of former Pies n' Thighs baker, Cecile Dyer.

Doesn't our dipper have a hipster look? Seriously, you can't escape it. If you can read it, a little more on the bananas.

Smorgasburg: Tasting Brooklyn

It started with the Shorty Tang noodles at noon. M said we had to go to Smorgasburg, we just had to go. He went earlier July when I went to Ellington. He raved about all the good things to eat, the view of Manhattan, being near the water in Brooklyn. I love a good view, and I love to eat.

Smorgasburg is a weekly food court and market in Williamsburg, land of the hipster. Over 100 vendors took over a vacant lot, in an extension of the Brooklyn Flea Market. The place was popping by 1 pm and if you don't get there before a certain point in the afternoon, what you want might be gone. Things aren't cheap, but they certainly are tasty.

So the Shorty Tang noodles. Cold sesame noodles mixed on the spot to order. Shorty Tang was a real person in Chinatown (of Hwa Yuan restaurant). Tang died years ago, but his recipe has been picked up and carried on. And it's available here.

Next we moved on to the main course. M was going to get the raved-about chorizo sandwich. I was pulled in by the Country Boys tacos. They looked authentic. This vendor has won a Vendy and usually sets up shop at the ball fields in Red Hook. A chicken and pork taco with everything was soon handed over. On corn tortillas. This was what really sold me, and if you've seen my Austin post you know I can't say no.

Delicious. So delish, M had one and we didn't get to the chorizo. You can see a little of Manhattan from our shady lunch spot.

The whole thing is great. Lots of seating and great people watching. I loved the Charlotte- Hornets-trucker-hat wearing tattoed-to-the-hilt, skinny-jean-wearing guy pushing his Maclaren. Who says you have to stop being a hipster when the kids come?

We didn't stop with the main dishes, but I'll save dessert for tomorrow. Let me rephrase that. DessertS because we couldn't have just one.

Ice Cream Sandwich Crackdown

Yesterday, I was checking my food blogs and saw a quick story about buy one get one ice cream sandwiches at the Sweetery Truck, to promote something for Visa. And the picture in Midtown Lunch looked like a Melt Bakery ice cream sandwich (see my May Post to learn about Melt Bakery). So I even put a note on my calendar to remember to run out if I had time this afternoon.

Well, well, well. Apparently, they just USED the picture of K's Melt Bakery Ice Cream sandwiches. So I was tasked to learn more, since they would recognize K. I felt like I was on Dateline, getting to the bottom of this.

K breaks left down 53rd, I continue on to the truck.

There are only 2 kinds. These aren't the Melt wrappers. This is the thing, Sweetery carries Melt products, so what is with this new sandwich?

I ask are there always these kinds. I ask where else can I get them. She's evasive. And honestly, I can't remember what exactly I asked now, but it was along these lines. I'm not sure I'm Dateline material quite yet.

We open up the wrappers. I think one is salted caramel ice cream, the other is chocolate. Watching the waist and knowing I had a hard run later, I didn't need to eat the entire thing. But the cookie was a little soft. I was told it was undercooked. And when you freeze undercooked cookies, there is more moisture in them so they end up icy. And they were very buttery. I'm depending on the expert here at this point. But the moisture thing is something I need to remember when I make ice cream sandwiches at the beach in August.

So don't go to the Sweetery Truck for this deal. Go straight to Melt Bakery at the Hester Street Fair or on the High Line. And tell K I said hello!

Summer Equals Salad

Another trip to the Farmer's Market. This time we actually talked to Keegan and Liam (of our favorite stand). Keegan recognized M, as they've talked about being a "grower" versus a "farmer". We talked about marketing the vegetables. Not surprisingly, big piles draw people in. They did share the secret behind their big beautiful radishes and carrots. It's the soil. Apparently it's quite rare and is only in 3 places in the country. It's a black soil that's very light. So the vegetables can grow very big, versus vegetables in dense, more compact soil.

Our salad was great. Just tossed with a little olive oil and white balsamic. With a classic baguette from Eataly. And some nice rose wine.

Friday: Hot Hot Hot

It's hot here. That's how I'll sum it up. I'm not sure I realized what 103 felt like, but that sun is brutal and there is just no escape if you are walking somewhere. Even with all the free snacks and drinks at the office (yes, I am appreciative), sometimes you just want a change, or to get out. So McDonald's smoothies all around. I opted for the ice cream cone. As basic as it gets, but very tasty.

Double Rainbow

Happy Friday! I forgot about this picture from last week. It was a beautiful day and we were on our way home from the gym. I noticed the Hudson looked a little rough from spin class, but our instructor had just commented on what a beautiful view it was with the sunset. So I didn't think much of the waves. As soon as we were about to leave, it was a torrential down pour with rain pelting the side of the building.

And then this double rainbow. You need to look close. The second is a little faint. Right between the IAC building and the Jean Nouvel apartment building. No, unfortunately, this is not where I live. It makes me feel better when I think the people in there back right up to the female correctional facility (the brick building to the left). See, it's not all that great.

What I wouldn't do for a nice down pour now. Something to take away this humidity.

Collin's Creamery

Ice Cream, can it get any more summer than this? Our last stop before we all headed home was Collin's Creamery where they make their own ice cream. My parents go nearly every weekend, I didn't want to miss the trip. I'd like to think my decision making skills about things like dinner and ice cream flavors has gotten better as I've gotten older.

Alas, I couldn't decide so ended up with a scoop of coconut chocolate chip and a scoop of peppermint. Not your typical ice cream paring. But, yum.

We all took our ice cream out to the picnic table and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Yup, those are cornfields behind me. The Ellington area is rural, what can I say?

I couldn't have been happier.

Going Home, Always Good

When I think of summer, I think of corn on the cob. Grilling. Relaxing with family. Ice cream and popcicles. It's always good, especially when I get to spend a full weekend with my parents and sister. Ellington is a small town, with a few newer additions since I was a kid running around the neighborhood (Big Y!). But it's still Ellington, where they tell you to take an extra few ears of corn because this is the first harvest and they are a little small. Oh, and where you can buy bunnies, apparently. Not sure M. would have appreciated that little addition to the apartment.

My mom has bran muffins and coffee ready for my arrival. We stand around the kitchen and catch up, words and updates flying back and forth. Then it's off for some shopping where my Dad has the patience of a saint. What man really wants to let 3 women loose in DSW? My Dad.

And then we head back home for hamburgers on the grill. Oh, and Birthday Cake for Amy and Jill! We both get our names on the cake because that's the only fair way to do it, of course. Yes, I departed so quickly after Christmas to avoid the storm, we didn't get to have my early birthday cake. My mom remembers this detail, of course. And despite all the years, my mom and dad give me a gift on my sister's birthday (because that's what she did when we were little so no one would feel left out).

What a great weekend.

Guest Post: LC In DC!

Loyal readers, I'm heading to Ellington, CT for the weekend. I need to assure my mom that I am indeed alive and well. To get my sister and I at home for one weekend requires great feats of scheduling. But I didn't want you to not have a post leading into the weekend, so am presenting a guest post from LC, a dear Darden girlfriend. And she doesn't disappoint, she sent me food pictures to include! Enjoy!

Hi Jillie readers…every week when I read this blog, I feel guilty that while J. and M. are hitting the NY hot spots, E. (hubbie) and I continue to have the same routine pretty much every weekend – dinner at usual spot, come home to Comcast OnDemand movie, punctuate occasionally with a dinner with friends. We do not have the excuse of children – really we have no excuse for not getting out more. In fact, as E. reminds me, we live in one of the oldest cities in the U.S., never mind that it’s 10 min from DC.

So last night we decided to venture to a Nationals game. I am a huge baseball fan, and I haven’t been to a game since…well, it’s been a long time and I believe it was the Round Rock Express (Double A), where my former employer used to occasionally rent a skybox. But that was the minors anyway, which doesn’t really count.

We started by boarding the water shuttle at the pier in Old Town Alexandria. If you live in or near Alexandria, this is really the way to go – a lovely 20 minute boat ride later (complete with a bar), we arrive right at the first base entrance. The Nationals are playing the Rockies – along with the game, I enjoy a fat Hebrew National hot dog and nachos with the yummy cheese you only get at the ballpark. I wanted ice cream too, but the game ended abruptly with a depressing double play (and subsequent win) by the Rockies, and we had to board our boat home.

As an added bonus for my first guest blog, I thought I would share my Sunday morning too, which includes 2 other historical treasures from my home town. First, as E. also reminds me, our church is a famous historical site where many founding fathers attended service. Last week for the “Independence day” service, they brought G.W.’s Bible up from Mt. Vernon and read from it (no kidding). No such luck this week. Bonus – the church is also down the street from one of the most delicious French cafes I have ever visited (even while living in France) -- Le Pain Quotidien.

The chicken chorizo and organic cheddar omelet is my fave – today we had it with the blueberry and corn scone. Yum!

New Orleans Style Iced Coffee

San Francisco: Blue Bottle @ the Ferry Bldg

I missed our Joe coffee trip on Saturday, but it was the kind of day where I was up for coffee a little later. Maybe an Iced Coffee. M said that Blue Bottle had a spot on the High Line. Blue Bottle is a San Francisco thing, and something I didn't write about in my May posts about my trip out there. I really wanted to try it, it was just hard to fit it in during my afternoon at the Ferry Building

I had my chance. Granted, it wasn't hot drip. I went with the New Orleans style. Now, I've seen this around, but didn't know exactly what it was. It says it's sweet, and I don't like my coffee drinks too sweet (because I wonder how much sugar and calories are in it). But she sold me, she said the "slight" sweetness balanced the chicory of the coffee.

And it was great. Even better with the whole milk because it's creamier. Loved it. Will be back, and would like to get to the Brooklyn outpost. I heard it's coming to Rock Center, so that might be easier.

Vegetables This Week: Jersey Tomatoes

I think I've posted a picture from the Union Square Greenmarket for 3 weeks in a row now. Well, we were back this weekend.

We love Stokes for our tomatoes. There is a list to tell you how to tell if it's ripe (don't squeeze!). Look at the color on the top and bottom, they should pretty much match. The Stokes Grower (yes, it's a Grower versus a Farmer) helped pick one that was good for a salad Saturday night.

And when did squash and zucchini start to come in round shapes? I was intrigued so had to get a few.

Coney Island Swim Time

Just a month left of training and we are in our last big push to be race ready. So we train like we'd race, picking up the pace towards the finish. At least that's what the coaches want us to do.

Last weekend I came home after our 38 mile ride and actually said "I think I could just do the Half Ironman from here". I figured it's only a 50 mile bike ride and I was running 9 miles. I'm so close!

Well, I was jolted back to reality today when we had our open water swim practice at Coney Island. I don't know if it was my dinner Friday night, dinner with a mix of salt water, the wetsuit tight around my neck, or the 100 people in my intermediate group. But I was not feeling it yesterda morning. I wanted to stand up and ask if I could be done. Lesson learned: maybe don't have falafel, wine, hummus and the works the night before.

We swam between the rock areas that separated the water in the picture up above. It was a great day weatherwise, though. My first time to Coney Island and Brighton Beach. I only know the Q train from 59th & Lex to Herald Square...not all the way out to Brooklyn.

But I made it! It was only 7, so very calm and peaceful before the crowds.

We swam then hit the boardwalk for a run. Now, had I been feeling up to it, I would have had some Russian Food in Brighton Beach. But not today, another time. It was fun to see, lots of Russian, and old ladies in their swimsuits.

Now, I've done this 3 times already and know exactly what the swim is like. And I've made it to the swim end successfully 3 times now. So this shouldn't be a problem. It all sounds so easy, but when you start combining the pieces and mix in some adrenaline, water and the mechanical issues of the bike, well, it all seems alot more involved.

Soba Noodle Time: Sobakoh

A nice plate of homemade soba noodles in the East Village.

We were in the neighborhood for a Japanese comedy show (Kenji in America) to support a few friends, and we needed dinner before. We happened upon Sobakoh and gave it a try. There is a guy making the noodles right in front, so I watched him stretch and cut while we waited for our dinner.

I had the Tsuke Tororo cold soba with a sticky yam dipping sauce. I'll admit I wasn't exactly sure what to do with the quail egg, so I added it to the broth. I have no idea if that's the right way to do it!

Bright and Cheerful

We were walking through Washington Square Park the other weekend and came upon the "sandman". It's just a guy, a bunch of bags of colored sand and a free canvas. The kids love him. I like to watch him, too. Very nice guy, he was answering questions from onlookers. Apparently he's never been told to leave in New York. Somewhere else, but not here.

Just something bright and cheerful for you mid week.

By the way, I watched a documentary on Helvetica (the font) this weekend (I know, we were really searching on Netflix). But it was actually really interesting. Helvetica is everywhere! So, I'm going to go with Helvetica for a bit.

Our day ended with Strawberry Shortcake. I had a craving for it, the kind with drop biscuits and Cool Whip or Reddi Whip. Just like when I was a kid. My grandmother also did the drop biscuits. Mine were care of Trader Joe's mix. And I really was going to make real whipped cream, but I didn't want to dirty another bowl, I'll admit.

Earlier in the day we went down to the South Ferry stop and walked up through Tribeca. Here's a shot of Lady Liberty, how appropriate for the Fourth. Lots of tourists, I felt like one taking pictures.

And then I wanted to see how the World Trade Center area was progressing, it's really coming along. They even have the glass on the outside now.

Finished up our day with a burger at The National on Rivington (it was really good!). Juicy, the right bun, and some blue cheese on top. Good call, M.

Rainy Sunday = Coffee & Doughnut

Rain. More rain. But it's Sunday and we like our coffee. So we geared up (me with umbrella, M is too much of a man to carry an umbrella apparently) and set off.

We didn't even check to see if it was open, we took our chances. As we approached, the blackboard was not out, but I saw movement inside. YES! I hadn't seen the oatmeal cake doughnut out before, but had heard good things. M got his cinnamon bun.

Second stop: Lavazza at Eataly
This is one of our favorite coffees in the city (I still want to check out the west coast Blue Bottle in Brooklyn). Yes, we brought our own pastries. I like the Italian ones at Eataly, but not as much as my Doughnut Plant doughnut.

So a quick report out. This doughnut was really really good! I didn't know what to expect with the oatmeal, but it created a crispiness on the outside. And the outer edge of the doughnut has a crisp crumb to it. And the glaze soaked in to make it moist. Loved it. There were some fruits or something in there. Delicious. I was doing research on the other flavors and saw the Carrot Cake has cream cheese in it. That's my next one.

Sour Cherries at the Greenmarket in Union Square.

Does't this just look like summer. Granted, I'm not sure what you make with sour cherries. I like my cherries in pie. Gearing up for a long weekend, with some city exploration, some tasty eats, and a bounty of fresh vegetables from our Greenmarket trip today. We've got fresh garlic and dill for the buttermilk dressing. Tomatoes (ones with taste!), carrots, radishes and fresh lettuce for the salad. And with some Whispering Angel, we're set!

It Started at Buvette

Back in May we had one of the loveliest dinners I can remember. It was a spring night, we wanted to try something new, so picked a restaurant from our Yelp bookmarks...and walked to the West Village. We landed at Buvette. There was a line, but not too long. Inside it was cute and charming. Very welcoming, a place you'd come with friends.

Our French waiter guided us through some cheese selections (a hard, a soft, something in between) and a few other smaller plates. Honestly, every single bite was tasty. There was just the right amount of food, not too much. I loved the duck confit that arrived in a little jar.

Our waiter chatted with us a bit, told us we'd love Paris. He's been all over, recently new to New York. What was nice is that he never once made us feel rushed. It was like I was in a friend's house. He did share the the woman behind the restaurant thought very carefully about every detail of the layout. She did a good job, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We're both fond of the rose, especially in summer, so opted for a bottle of the French Whispering Angel. I'll admit, I didn't love the name, but I did love the wine. It was good to the very last drop. Our waiter looked at the color before he poured and said it was going to be good (now, who knows if he really knew anything, but it certainly sold me).

So good in fact, that we sought it out after. Mark found it near Grammercy and we bought a bottle to La Follia (great Italian). I found it at Sherry-Lehmann near the office. When we were in Chelsea Market and saw it again...we decided we might need to own a case.

I told Mark that it is a wine you enjoy the entire way through. Some wines I get tired with and by the end of the bottle, I'm sort of glad it's the end. Not my Whispering Angel. We'll be enjoying a nice chilled glass, or many glasses, all summer.

To me, June is strawberry month. And strawberry shortcake. I remember as a kid, going to pick strawberries with my mom and sister. And we'd eat lots of them. And have strawberry shortcake. My mom made it with bisquick biscuits and cool whip. Super easy. I think I might have to make some soon.

These are from the farmer's market. For shortcake, I can live with using Driscoll's from California (because if it's not Driscoll's we can't have it in the house, per M). But I bet these are good.

Saturday. Saturdays now mean 7 am brick workouts at Riverside Park. Honestly, I like it. I like the team training, I like to see everyone else out there, I like the tips from coaches along the way, and I like pushing myself. Four miles running and about 25 on the bike, not so bad. And a bunch of hills mixed in. Oh, and they made us do all these core exercises at the end. I wish I had the picture of me in my snazzy Team in Training shorts and singlet. Next week.

But I also like to enjoy good food after some tri training.

This week we headed east towards Alphabet City, with the goal to try something new. I have this Food Network Guide to Summer Dining a colleague sent me...so when we walked by one of the falafel places in there, Cafe Rakka, I threw that out as an option. I'll admit, that guide is interesting, there are some places in there I would definitely disagree with and it tends towards commercial or larger names.

I'm not lying when I say I felt like I was in a little place in Cairo. The music, the decor, the back kitchen. Our falafels were handmade to order. And crispy on the outside. I took everything on it. It was pretty good and you couldn't beat the price. It's a little different than Taim, which is Israeli, and comes with some sort of salad mix inside. The pita is a little thinner here. Delicious, though. But I think my go-to is still Taim in the West Village. Check out my April 2010 post for more details.

And as I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas. I couldn't resist Butter Lane when we walked by. This was also in the guide. I've made it known that cupcakes are hit or miss with me. They can be really pretty and very dry. They can be too big with too much going on (um, Crumbs?). These were very moist, just the right size. And the cream cheese frosting won me over. I wasn't smiling in this shot, but I was certainly a happy girl.

Every Friday I have a lunch appointment. On my calendar it says 40 CAR GO (a little play on a company ticker, if you are familiar with a Terminal, you'll understand. Oddly, Blogger won't let me put the < > around the GO). My next door neighbor and I have been to Forty Carrots at Bloomingdale's twice now to sample what I think could be the best frozen yogurt in New York.

Ok, I need to try other places, I know. But they keep disappearing: Red Mango, 16 Handles. Flavaboom just opened an outlet, but it could be gone soon, too. Remember the days when TCBY was everywhere? I never see those anymore.

Yes, I've written about it before (see my March Post). But I didn't really try it then. And now I've had it. The coffee with chocolate, the coffee with plain....maybe plain and peanut butter on Friday.

You know what it is? It's just plain creamy, with a healthy serving for the right price. Pinkberry seems overpriced now. My cup below is $4.50 if you are curious.

And while I've always been so so on the tangy thing, this one is tangy AND creamy. So it's perfect.

Look at this yummy treat. And then look at what some tourist got. Talk about yogurt and fruit. I had to take a picture it was so funny to see.

And just so you can see how much I enjoyed it, this is me digging in back in the office. Forty Carrots is connected to a little lunch spot on the 7th floor. Definitely a ladies who lunch crowd. Me, I need to head back to the office...

I will admit, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Arch's in Charlottesville. They had super low cal flavors and something called the Archer with all kinds of mix ins. Oh, how I loved those in business school. But I can't get there as quickly, so until my next Charlottesville trip, I fondly remember those afternoons with the girls.

I Love Stephen

I love Stephen Colbert. Ok, and I also really like the real Stephen Colbert. I'd love to be invited to his house in CT (I think that's where he lives) for a BBQ sometime. And I love the show. So when my coworker got the ticket release day from a twitter feed, I sent that info to my fellow Colbert lover, and he got us 4 tickets to the show. We were joined by Dan & Dan, also Stewart and Colbert fans.

We started the wait around 5 and were let in around 6:45. You aren't guaranteed a seat, thus the reason to show up early in line. But you are on a list and you can go stand with your friends when you arrive. A comedian warmed up the audience, and then Stephen answers questions as himself. Dan got to ask one, something about who he models himself after seeing that the far right from 5 years ago is not so far right anymore. He said it was originally O'Reilly, Anderson Cooper (because he's like a bright shiny penny) and someone else.

I'm not always a big fan of the musical guests, but it was Bon Iver (of Skinny Love). He was actually pretty good for Q&A with Stephen, and then he sang something off his new album. Then Skinny Love for the website. Yes, I know I'm the target for that song, the other 3 guys with me just didn't appreciate it as much. There were a few retakes, which was interesting to watch.

Then we were done and went over to the Pony Bar on 10th Ave for a beer. This is a great spot for a beer. Lots of really interesting beers on tap. The list changes daily. Everything is $5 and the food is pretty good too. Just a little far west if you happen to live in Brooklyn or Astoria.

Doughnut Plant: Blueberry

I couldn't pass this up this morning. We were on our way to Lavazza at Eataly (some of my favorite coffee, I'll admit). And Doughnut Plant was calling me, especially with new flavors on the board out front. I couldn't resist the Blueberry yeast donut, covered in a fresh blueberry glaze. And it tasted SO incredibly fresh. I've been stocking up on the $2 pints at the fruit stands, I can't get enough so this was totally in my wheelhouse.

It also came in the cake version, but the yeast doughnut and I have become best friends at Doughnut Plant. I was never ever a yeast doughnut girl in the past. The lavender doughnut was a close 2nd, just because I was so curious. Maybe next week.

Made my day, and gave me just the energy I needed for the 22 mile bike ride in central park.

Kava for Coffee

Kava is Croatian for Cafe.

Kava opened up just south of the Meatpacking and High Line entrance a few months ago. With some really nice espresso makers and a cute spot, it was always on our list to come back to. So on our walk to Hester last week, we stopped in to the Washington Street location. I didn't need a coffee, but it was a great excuse to check out the space (and the garden!).

There is a nice warm glow to the shop. It was hard to capture in pictures. Roman & Williams designed the interior. This is the same group behind the Ace Hotel and the Standard Hotel. The owner, John Saric, is a partner at the Ace and lives right around the corner.

The espresso machines here are pretty high tech. They have the next-generation Strada machines built by Marzocco. Apparently, there are only 3 in all the NYC boroughs, and 2 are here. The other is at the Whitney. They use Stumptown beans (Stumptown is also at the Ace, another great coffee shop). I just had a regular coffee which was ok...not like my Joe, maybe a little weak. I really think I need to have one of the lattes, so will be back. The space won me over.

The High Line: North to 30th Street is Open!

Ever since The High Line opened 2 years ago this month, I've been eagerly awaiting the day the segment from 20th Street north to 30th Street was going to open. And this was the week. More to come as we only explored it quickly (on the way to ice cream sandwiches @ Melt). But since the northern end is literally in my back yard, I'll be back.

This is where the new segment ends and the "spur" circles back. I believe the city got the rights to this so will save it. The large building on the right is one of the postal facilities. And to the left off the picture is where NJT and Amtrak head into Manhattan.

This is just such a great example of taking an unused space and making something really cool. Granted, it took a lot of high profile, wealthy individuals to make it happen. There are always a ton of tourists walking along the elevated park, stopping at large benches for lounging, taking in the view of the Hudson, looking at the neighborhood from a new perspective. Apparently, there hasn't been even one issue with crime. Nothing.

It's been a great success for the Chelsea area. And I would have to think this new section that ends at what is going to be the Hudson Yards area will do wonders for the area. Related is the developer behind the location, the same ones behind the Time Warner Center. Honestly, 20 years ago, no one would have gone to this area (I heard it was all drugs and prostitutes). But now, with wine bars down the street, million dollar condos, and Tom Colicchio's beer garden at the base of The High Line, it's a destination. Oh, and did I mention that food trucks will be parked here all summer to greet the tourists? Easy access to some of my favorite truck items. There are still quite a few night clubs and auto body shops to give it character. But with the new apartments going up, I wonder how long some will last.

This is a peak at the Half King bar on 23rd as well. It's one of those places I've walked by hundreds of times on my way to the gym. Sebastian Junger is a part owner. And an art installation that is actually a birdhouse. The artist was there tending to it (also on 20th St)

I just liked this tree, I've never seen anything like it. They do a great job of planting seasonal flowers and greenery, so it's always changing.

Melt Bakery: Melts in My Mouth

What happened to me? It's nearly the middle of June and I haven't posted this month. No great reason, just busy with work, enjoying the city and triathlon training. But to kick things off again, going to talk about our little adventure today.

It was a bit dreary today. Too dreary for me to be excited about that 7:30 am Team in Training run for the Tri, but I got myself ready, biked up to Riverside Park....and finished a 9 mile run when all I thought we were doing was running the race course (6 miles). I had no idea I had it in me, I'll be honest. Especially since 3 miles on the treadmill last night was incredibly painful.

And the dreariness continued, but it was not going to stop us from walking over to the LES (Lower East Side) and checking out the Hester Street Fair. With one very particular stop at Melt Bakery's outpost. I've known they sell their goods here for awhile, but somehow never made it.

Below is Kareem, one half of Melt (Julien came later). I know Kareem from work (his other full time job during the day). There were a few showers so we hung out under the tents, watched the customers come, talked about the business and flavor combinations. A pretty good afternoon, despite the dreariness. I even covered the stand while Kareem ran home for a minute. You can find Melt items on the Sweetery truck (whoopie pies!) and at Melt (the grilled cheese shop on the UES), and soon near the High Line (and lots of other places).

I went for The Elvis (peanut butter cookies and banana ice cream). M went for the very popular Morticia (chocolate cookie rolled in turbinado sugar with chocolate rum ice cream). And because we hung out for quite a bit and worked up an appetite, I had the opportunity to sample the Cinnamon Toast Crunch (snickerdoodle cookies and cinnamon ice cream). Yum.

I told Julien there could be a Jill...some accompaniment to The Jack (pumpkin for October). Maybe it's Candy Corn inspired. Just thinking out loud here.

The storefront on Orchard is going to open soon. I heard the peach inspired ice cream sandwich is delicious, we just need to wait for peaches to be in season. I'll be back.

Melt is stationed at the Hester Street Fair. If you've watched Bethenny on Bravo, you may know this from the episode where food blogger Nick took her for a food tasting. Lots of little shops, things to eat, things to buy. I bought Chai Caramel Sauce at another stand, so you'll be seeing a report out on that soon.

Fleur de Sel Caramel Sauce, More Please

I had heard about this Fleur de Sel Caramel Sauce from Trader Joe's. M had it in San Francisco at a dinner with friends. I kept hearing how good it was, drizzled over vanilla ice cream. Yet I never saw it on the East Coast. Maybe it was too popular to keep in stock. Maybe it was being hoarded on the West Coast.

But I finally had my chance to try it. We saw it one Sunday and didn't even debate a second. It was in the cart.

And it was delicious. Salty and sweet. It's a bit thick so best used at room temperature. So if you have any left over (you might not!), you'll need to refrigerate it, and let it warm up a bit before using it.

It's best over ice cream of course. Our 100% Trader Joe's dessert with a friend the other week, care of Trader Joe and Trader Jacque: morello cherries, fleur de sel caramel sauce and super premium vanilla ice cream.

I'm Padma for 15 Minutes

Lazy, drizzly Sunday. We wander out and duck into Chelsea Square Diner. Somewhere I've walked by a thousand times and have never been to. So we had a craving for pancakes and went. And everything was exactly like I expected....PERFECT. Fast service, diner pancakes, generic maple syrup (and lots of it)...a little bit of grease from over the years....

So continuing on, I had us walk through the Meatpacking because I heard there was some Top Chef thing going on. There is an area where a few streets cross that lends itself to promotional displays, and on the way south when we walk to Soho. And there was the Top Chef tour with a cook off in 10 minutes, perfect timing!. We were the last on the list, but secured 2 spots in the back.

Nikki Cascone (Octavia's Porch) versus Angelo Sosa (Social Eatz, and one of my all time favs). This was the 12th stop on the tour, and it was certainly Bravo promotional heavy, but still 45 minutes of light entertainment, cooking and behind the scenes info.

Both cooked shrimp with a secret ingredient. One had watermelon juice and the other some sort of pumpkin seed, I think. But when I got my sampling plate, they both sort of looked the same. So my moment to be Padma, well, I failed.

But it was tasty and I learned a few Top Chef facts. The "stew room" when they are at judges table typically lasts a minimum of 5 hours, but as many as 9 hours. It's usually the people who think they'll be kicked off that drink the most then. And each episode is really filmed over about 3 days.

Here's looking forward to the next season! And no, they didn't tell us where it would be.

TCHO....Chocolate!

TCHO: The phonetic spelling for the first syllable of "chocolate". Where technology meets chocolate. According to the website, they are obsessed with innovation in whatever they do. And yes, there is a technology spin. Jane Metcalfe is the President of the company. She and her husband/significant other, Louis Rossetto, co-founded Wired magazine. I had heard about this chocolate producer from M, a big fan of Wired magazine (and the pop-up store around the holidays).

When I was looking for my office on the google map, they plotted TCHO at a pier not that far down the Embarcadero (on Pier 17). It is the only chocolate factory in San Francisco. Sorry Ghiradelli fans, the chocolate must not be produced in an San Francisco factory. It is an artisan chocolate producer, that is goes even further than fair trade. They help the farmers produce better cocoa beans to become premium producers.

Here it is, right on the pier. We missed the tour by 20 minutes, so we chatted with the sales person and sampled a few at the counter.

The chocolate comes in varietals, and the flavor comes from the cocoa beans that are raised in different places across the globe. The types are fruity, nutty, and chocolately, for example. The website will show you how to "taste" chocolate: smell, look, sound (of the break), aftertaste....

Right now, it's all dark chocolate but the very week we were there, they were producing their first batch of dark milk chocolate. Now that is up my alley. I love the creaminess of milk chocolate, I won't deny it.

Pretty cool space, pretty cool story. I'll admit, there is so much "artisan" chocolate out there these days, made by Brooklyn Hipsters who want to sail Cocoa beans from Africa to Brooklyn...it gets a little much. I can appreciate the desire to blend technology and chocolate (they have "beta 1.0" rounds to test types).

CA Hamburgers: The Habit & In-N-Out

Upon learning that there were a few burger joints I had not tried in the Bay Area, I thought I'd try to do some due diligence and check them all out. But a week of burgers and fries is not good for my bikini body, so we only made it to two. A new place and an old favorite.

First, a sunny afternoon at The Habit. It started in 1969 in Santa Barbara, CA. Yes, that's me in downtown Walnut Creek (after a hard day of bopping into my favorite stores). The burgers were pretty darn tasty. Soft bun, good burger, and grilled onions come with. And the waitress walks around and brings you extra sauce. I'd say it was almost as good as In-N-Out.

But then we went to In-N-Out the next day after a trip up to Marin. And it's still as good as I remember it. I know people love Five Guys, too (and more than the In-N-Out). But to me, there is nothing like the California version of the burger. It'll be a favorite.

What I didn't get to try was Nation's. They started in San Pablo, CA. So many burgers from CA (read "In-N-Out Burger by Stacy Perman, it talks about the start of so many fast food places, many in CA because of the driving nature of the state).

Which made me think of my top burger places. I'm going to admit, I'm particular about a few (the exact location I like it at, for example)...but my working list is below.

Shake Shake (must be in Madison Square Park on a nice NY evening after a long wait in line - because I think it tastes better because you've waited so long, not because it's the best burger I've ever had).

Pepples Donuts at the Ferry Building

Donuts. You know I like them. I like to try new ones. So when I told the woman at this stand I would be back, I wasn't lying. Besides, these donuts looked so pretty!

Continuing on my California adventure...we went into San Francisco one day so I could stop at the office out west, meet a friend for lunch and another friend for dinner (busy day!). While I waited for M to join me in the city, I killed some time at the Ferry building. And there are enough little food shops to poke around in to keep me busy for a bit.

But I committed to the Pepples Organic Donuts. I asked her what was most popular and took it. Salty Caramel. I vowed to myself I would only eat half, too. Just to be sort of good.

Like you might expect here, it's totally organic and vegan (honestly, the vegan part can be a turnoff for me, so you better make it look like a really good dessert if you go down that route). The kiosk at the Ferry building has been open about a year now. I had to snap a shot of the girl who helped me decide, she definitely had a Brooklyn look. She rung me up on her iPad, and if you need to use a credit card, she'll swipe you with Square (how Bay area!). Note: Square is a device you plug into the jack on an iphone/ipad allowing you to accept credit card payments.

I couldn't resist the shot of the donut with the Bay Bridge in the background, so got low on the bench to get close to the donut...slid over to get a little closer....and oops, splinter in the behind! Yes, not pretty. I thought I had taken care of it that afternoon. Alas, I didn't and worried about the wood in my tush for the next few days until my doctor pulled it out.

As for the donut, the caramel covering was DELICIOUS. Sweet and salty - love that combo! The donut part was pretty good, too. Good crumb, and a soft spot near the top middle where it's a little gooier maybe, if that makes sense.

California Time

We just got back from a great week in California. We went out to visit friends & family, relax, and enjoy the fresh, clean air in the Bay area.

This was my first Virgin America flight. And it was great. It leaves from the international terminal at JFK (the only other terminal I like besides Jetblue's Terminal 5). The staff is smartly dressed, they have touch screen computers to check in, and pink/purple lights on the plane. People look much better than in those harsh white lights on other carriers. I slept most of the way out there, but managed to check out the inflight wi-fi on the ipad so I could alert M that I was arriving at 11:30 am and NOT 2:55 pm. I misread the email and just thought that was my arrival time, it was the departure time for the return flight.

On the way back, I ordred a tuna sandwich via the touch screen menu at my seat. Ok, so I also just wanted to try it out. They delivered it in about 10 seconds. And honestly, it was pretty good. As in, the bread was not soggy (it was actually fluffy wheat bread), it was not overly mayo and it actually had capers and olives in it. The beauty of T2 at SFO is that they have great food selections to eat there or take on board.

So I'll finish up with a report out on my first day there...

I had a pick up at the airport. And another slight mistake, I got off at the wrong Bart stop.

Anyhow, we managed to make it home for lunch with the family and then headed to Berkeley for a BBQ with a bunch of M's friends. We had some time on the way there so traveled up over Grizzly Peak with a stop at the Berkeley Rose Garden. Where the roses were in full bloom.

Good times were had by all, as we crowded around the dining room table and passed food and wine.

Finally Kino Weather?

When I was in Florida in February for my sister's wedding, one of the guests said I needed to go to the Kino Factory in Key West for sandals. Kino's? I had never heard of them but was intrigued. Who doesn't love a good deal on sandals. And they are made in Key West, so figured I could get them at the source.

So on our last day, on our trip to the town, I had two must-dos: Southernmost Point and this tucked away Kino store. Found both. And while M kept the bench occupied, I went in and conducted my business.

There was a long shelf of all the colors and styles. I request the 8 from behind the counter to try on and confirm the size. And boom boom boom, I've got the sizes and colors in my hand in less than 5 minutes (nope, I didn't try on all the pairs). Why debate at this price? I just found it funny as some of the tourists, debated, needed different sizes...for this price, you just buy it and give it away if it doesn't fit in the end.

And I'm off to California tomorrow morning (for a week, so looking forward to it). And I think it might be time to break them out! I don't do a lot of flip flop wearing in NY. I walk too much and I find the grime at the end of the day kind of gross. I only need one trip to see what my feet look like and won't do it again the rest of the season.

So I'm sharing the Kino secret...I think you can find them online, so it's not that big of a secret.

5 Boro Bike Ride

The weather was absolutely perfect for our 1st Five Boro Bike Tour. The 32,000 bikers make their way from the southern tip of Manhattan, up through the Bronx, over into Queens, then Brooklyn and on to finish up in Staten Island.

We only had one issue last night at around 10 pm when we realized the air was leaking out of M's tubeless tires. We checked CVS and Duane Reade for some silicon adhesive, but decided not to risk using the wrong material...so this morning at 7:45 am, M made some calls to bike rental places and got the last one at a Toga. After our rendezvous point on 23rd Street, we started on our adventure.

The organizers do a great job. The entire route is blocked off to vehicle traffic, well signed, lots of "marshalls" to help out and fix flats...and nicely organized rest stops. I can't even imagine the number of bananas handed out.

And I'll admit, we bailed on Staten Island and crossed back into Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. A quick change of clothes and we finished off the day with Five Guys burgers. We deserved it.

Our Own Middleton

While Catherine dropped the Middleton for her new royal life, we gained a Middleton in our family this year. We finally finished all the wedding celebrations this month with the celebratory party for friends and family in New Hampshire at the Three Chimneys Inn.

Once again, a great time was had by all. More cake, dancing, friends and memories.

It's a beautiful Easter Day. The weather is warm (finally!) and people were out in Central Park in droves. It's been a cold winter, and a long cold spring. So it's about time the nice weather got here.

Last Friday I caught up with and old friend from a past employer (who brings good things to life). I was coming from work, he was coming from an errand, and we happened up the Macaron Cafe somewhere in the middle.

It's a cute little spot on Madison and 59th Street. Totally delightful. They have a choice of sandwiches and you can grab an open table in the back. We both took the daily special (a great tuna with avocado on wheat bread, I'd go back!).

And then followed it up with a 6-pack of macarons. I'd have to say that my favorites were the almond and pistachio. The rose-lavendar was good in concept but not in reality. Bouchon might still be my favorite, so will have to keep on trying!

It's Coming! Sullivan St. Bakery in Chelsea

There are signs of life! We had word that there would be another outpost of Sullivan St, Bakery after the little coffee shop closed in February 2010. I've been waiting for action.

Nestled between Txikito (a great tapas place) and Co. (Jim Lahey's pizza place), Sullivan will offer me bread and bread and more tasty bread. Yes, Jim already owns the place next door! Though, I'll admit, it's not my favorite pizza, the place is always busy.

There was a big uproar when the coffee shop guy was "being kicked out" of this little stretch that's gone a little more upscale. Even I signed the petition. Apparently, it was a little more involved than that and not such a sad story.

I'll welcome Jim. His other outpost is in Hell's Kitchen, though he sells his bread to several restaurants and other locations. This is straight from his website:

"Bread is more than bread. It reaches all the way from the belly to the soul."

I'm ready. But September 2011? Yes, that's what the sign says, coming in September.

Taim: My Favorite Falafal

There was a point about 2 years ago when we ate lunch here quite frequently. It would be a nice day, we'd look at one another, ask what was for lunch, and head here. It's tucked away on a side street in the West Village. It's a tiny little shop, but packed with flavor. Get here early to snag one of the 5 stools inside, or on the bench outside. Just don't sit on any of the steps of the surrounding buildings - the sign inside Taim will warn you it's frowned upon. I'm sure the neighbors hate it.

So the specialty is falafal (3 different kinds are offered) in a pita, but we've had the sabich sandwich, too. Instead of the light, fried-just-right balls of falafal, the pita is filled with grilled eggplant. All the sandwiches come with hummus, tahini and the Israeli salad. We typically go for a side of tabouli.

Oh, it's just so good. And do you know what else I appreciate? That they put falafal deep in the pocket of the pita. So when I get to the end it's not all bread and hummus. There are still falafal left. Yup, I appreciate that.

I'd have to say, some of the best falafal in the city. I've tried Mamoun's...I took an Arabic class at NYU and everyone kept raving about this place. So of course, I tried it. It was super cheap (I'm talking $2.50 for a falafal sandwich), and the sauce was super spicy. In fact, it was too spicy (and I like spice). So in the end, Taim is the winner.

They've got a mobile truck, so maybe I'll have more midweek lunches here!

More S'mores, Please!

I was in need of a tasty bar recipe. And I knew my sister, A, would have a good recipe on hand. As a teacher and fellow baker, I knew she wouldn't fail me. Five minutes after my phone call, I have the emailed recipe and text with the picture from the cookbook.

S'mores Bars. That was the answer. Apparently they were a hit when she last made them.

It only took 3 grocery stores to collect all the ingredients. We were out walking around for the day and hit them on our way home.

Trader Joe's: chips and butter (no marshmallows or graham crackers or unsweetened chocolate)
Whole Foods: graham crackers, organic of course (gluten free and fat free marshmallows? can't do that so had to make that 3rd stop)
NSA: unsweetened chocolate and marshmallows.

And out of the oven. Baked goodness.

And they were a hit at the party. Graham cracker crust, fudgy brownie, chocolatey top. A bit of sweet and crunch. I'll be adding these to my make again list.

Recipe:
10 Honey Maid Grahams, broken in half (20 squares) divided

3/4 cup butter or margarine

4 squares Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate

2 Cups sugar

3 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

1 cup flour

2 1/2 cups- Jet Puffed miniature marshmallows

1 cup Baker's semi-sweet Chocolate Chunks

(aluminum foil and cooking spray)

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Line: 13x9 inch pan with foil; spray with cooking spray. Place 15 squares in pan, with sides overlapping slightly. Break remaining grahams into pieces.

Microwave: Butter and chocolate squares in large microwavable bowl on high 2 min.; stir until chocolate is completely melted. Add sugar, eggs, and vanilla; mix well. Stir in flour. Pour over grahams in pan.

Bake: 30-32 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out with fudgy crumbs. (Do not overbake). Sprinkle with marshmallows and chocolate chunks. Bake 3-5 min. or until marshmallows begin to puff. Press reserve graham pieces gently into marshmallows. Cool. Use foil to lift brownies from pan before cuting to serve.

How to easily cut brownies: dip knife in warm water and wipe dry between cuts.

I would definitely recommend this last step. Mine were still a bit warm, so I had to put them in the freezer for a quick cool down. But the marshmallows were a little gooey.

My Top Chef

We are big Top Chef fans here. I love Gail, Padma and Tom (M isn't as big a fan of Gail or Padma), I love the challenges, and I especially love the All Star version.

But there aren't just 18 or so Top Chefs. I've got one living right here. And last night he came through with his BLT salad with homemade buttermilk dressing, a recipe we found earlier in the day at Barnes & Noble and which we just photographed with the iphone. While M was capturing recipes, I was taking pictures of books so I'd remember to add them to my list at home. Ahh, the beauty of technology.

Fresh dill really made the dressing. And then we followed it up with pasta.

Followed by dessert. My mom had given me a cake mix on one of my trips home (it's like grocery shopping, she's always passing off mixes). Since it's the weekend, we went all out with cake. We thought about going to Lulu, but I really was craving a moist box cake. I'll be totally honest. It's not fancy, but with a little doctoring care of the Cake Doctor cookbook, we had a classic yellow cake and homemade chocolate cream cheese frosting.

Delicious. And I might have a piece for breakfast today.

Princeton Day Trip: Witherspoon Bread Co

Today was a Princeton day for work. So like old times, I took the train down (how I've missed that 6:01 train!). But today was different, we took the route through down town near the university to stop in at the Witherspoon Bread Company. I could have just lived there all morning. It was warm and smelled so yummy.

Needless to say, I walked out with a Brioche for breakfast, an olive roll for the trip home on the shuttle, and a loaf of raisin walnut bread for the rest of the week. How I didn't realize this was on the way to work, I just don't know. All those opportunities for a warm bread product in the morning that I just let pass by!

When I reported on my little trip to my old team, I was told I also really needed to go to Olive's, the Bent Spoon and the House of Cupcakes near by as well...so you may see more on my Princeton eating tour.

Candy, Easter Style

I've held off for as long as possible. I tried to get to April. And then I went to Target and gave in.

I only allowed myself two purchases: Black Jelly Beans and Cadbury Creme Eggs.

I went with the orange ones, too. I do love the originals, there is something about that really sweet, sugary cream inside. Now, one path I could not go down was the malted milk ball egg one. Those are too addictive, I can't stop with one!

So I heard these eggs were "nice to eat". I didn't get to try one, someone had eggs for lunch, including my orange bunny laid eggs. That means I'll just have to get more, just to report back, of course.

Friend Time

Great weekend. Sad to be home already. Three college roommates, one sister, four "other men" and 5 kids. And burgers. With the fixings. And beer and wine. And a move to a new house. And one more to come.

It's hard to believe I've known A & B for, well, over 15 years. Very relaxing, hanging out in the kitchen, cooking and eating and talking. Lots of Speed Racer, J's special smoothies, and the other J's Challah French Toast. And no traffic on either side of the trip.

Thursday Nite Theater Nite

Last night was Theater Nite, West Village style.

Our friend, Dan Monaco, wrote and directed Trousers, which opened last night at the IRT on Christopher Street. Trousers is a play about two men - one wearing a 15 foot pair of trousers, and one not wearing any at all (and the bruising that ensues between them). Thank you, IRT website, for that summary. The Straddler, an interdisciplinary organization with a literary magazine, sponsored the play.

The play runs March 24th - April 8th at the IRT at 154 Christopher Street.

Instead of a pre-theater dinner, we did a quick stop for a snack. Our target was the Italian cookie place near Bleeker, but the bright lights of Sockerbit (Sweet and Swedish!) drew us in.

The "Ikea of Candy Stores" just opened this month. Bright, clean and sparse. It's so Swedish. And had lots of candy. I spent most of my time taking pictures, while M made the selections. I loved all the variations of licorice...salty licorice, loved it! As you can see from the message on the wall - it's transfat free and the colors are all natural. Very healthy.

And we followed up the play with a neighborhood Italian place. Super cozy, Italian staff, all business. Malatesta Trattoria on Washington Street, our little go to spot if we are in the neighborhood.
